Because of hazardous driving conditions and cold temperatures, winter can be a challenging time for vehicle owners to keep their car running smoothly. A conscientious vehicle owner will give it a little extra attention with quality automotive service as the coldest months of the year are approaching.

7 Tips to Keep your Car Operating at Peak Efficiency During Winter:

  1. Have the oil and filter changed regularly. Extreme cold weather (below -25° F) may require a different blend of motor oil for your vehicle.
  2. Have the cooling system, including the heater and defroster, checked to make sure it is operating properly to keep passengers warm and the windows free of fog.
  3. Replace old wiper blades regularly to maintain a safe field of vision. Stock up on windshield washer and don’t forget to carry an ice scraper.
  4.  Have your battery checked to make sure it is fully charging. A weak battery will have no reserve power to start a car when temperatures drop.
  5. Inspect all lights and bulbs (both outside and inside), replace any that are burned out, and make sure to clean the road grime from the lenses. You want to see and be seen!
  6. Check all tires and consider switching to winter tires--at the least all-season tires. Check for uneven tread wear and cuts or nicks in the sidewalls. You may want to rotate your tires. Check the inflation pressure before driving while the tires are cool. Don’t forget about the alignment and balancing so that your tires can maintain a grip on the road.
  7.  Stock an emergency kit inside the car that’s within easy reach, including a blanket, flashlight, cell phone and extra car charger, protein and energy snacks, and drinking water. Keep extra water, gloves, boots, blankets, flares, a small shovel, sand or kitty litter, and tire chains in the trunk.
